We went to europe and fell in love … with chimney cakes!
Every street we walked down in Prague and Budapest had the truly exquisite aroma of fresh, sweet dough cooking over an open fire.
After some intensive tasting sessions, we were hooked!
And what’s not to love …
Chimney Cakes, traditionally referred to as kürtőskalács, date back to Medieval times in Transylvania, and are officially the oldest pastry in Hungary.
Fresh, handmade dough is wrapped around a wooden roller and then covered in fine sugar. The heat of the fire caramelizes the sugar, creating a crunchy exterior shell while keeping the inside light and fluffy.
Once cooked, the cakes are covered in cinnamon sugar or other toppings, and can be filled with delicious spreads.
We immediately knew we wanted to bring these tasty treats back home with us to share across the Pittsburgh Metro area.
So we went to the Kurtos Academy in Murska Sobota, Slovenia to learn the art and became certified chimney cake bakers.
And the Chimney Cakery was born!
